CAPSTONE PROJECT
Internship with Paper Airplanes
For my Capstone Project, I volunteered with Paper Airplanes for three semesters. I taught English to students affected by conflict. Both of my students were from Syria, which gave me insight on the Syrian war and how their lives are directly affected by the conflict in that region. Paper Airplanes provides free one-on-one and group virtual language instruction. This experience not only heightened my awareness on issues occurring in the Middle East, but it also ignited my passion to work for people affected by conflict in that region. I want to expand my experience teaching English and aid refugees and migrants in this region as well.Â
This opportunity to intern with Paper Airplanes has taught me so much. It has connected with my studies, so that I was able to see my studies outside of the classroom. It has also fueled my passion, and pushed me closer to my career goals. I will be volunteering with an organization after graduation in Serbia, which helps support refugees and people on the move. I will be collecting violence reports on their situations in order to report the push backs they are facing. I am extremely excited for this opportunity, and I know it may not have been possible without my experience working one on one with vulnerable people through Paper Airplanes.
