GLOBAL LEARNING COURSES
WRITING ACROSS BORDERS
One of my favorite classes I have taken at FIU is called Writing Across Borders. It focused on different cultural rhetoric that is utilized across the Globe. We did research on how writing styles differ and how they are influenced by culture. One of my favorite activities that we did was a virtual study abroad experience. We worked with students from China to answer different prompts regarding our own writing experience. This class really broadened my perspective on how culture influences our lives.
HONORS SEMINAR: SOCIAL INNOVATION
In this course, I learned about how to be an entrepreneur to solve social problems. I really enjoyed this class because it was small and project based. Therefore, we were able to work one on one with the professor throughout the semester. I developed a project to help spanish speaking communities in the United States be successful in primarily English speaking environments. This class taught me how to be responsive to the needs of different communities and be proactive in developing a solution.
INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
In this course, I learned about the creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This course was extremely influential to my studies as we covered many different human rights issues that are occurring across the globe. We learned about the human rights violations in Kashmir, the violations against Uyghur Muslims, and the large influence climate change has on human rights. Ultimately, in this class I learned the importance of utilizing cultural relativism when analyzing issues of human rights.
LECTURES AND EVENTS
NICARAGUAN CRISIS: CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES
One of my favorite events I attended during my time at FIU, was the Nicaraguan Crisis: Causes and Consequences led by the former president of Costa Rica, Luis Guillermo SolÃs Rivera. This was an incredibly insightful and interactive lecture that opened my eyes to issues and corruption South American countries face.
VOLUNTEERING AT MARINE CLEANUP
Another event I attended was during the Martin Luther King volunteer day. I volunteered with Alternative Breaks and cleaned up trash from the marina. That day we learned the true impact that pollution plays on the global community. I was stunned by the amount of garbage we pulled from the mangroves. It was hard work but extremely rewarding to see how much garbage we removed from our local Miami waterways.
